Aspiring to What's Right
Dear friend of Creation,
Like every other freshman at Ketcham High School in Wappingers, New York, Lauren faces daily challenges as a student. She contends with an endless stream of homework to finish, books to read, reports to write, and tests to take.
This semester, one of Lauren’s classes is honors biology—a demanding course by any standard. But the demands on Lauren are even greater. Not only is Lauren learning biology, but she also finds herself defending the truth of creation to her teacher, who promotes evolutionist doctrine. Here’s an excerpt from a letter Lauren wrote to us last month…
“We have just recently started the unit on evolution, which I have been dreading since the beginning of the school year. My teacher is very firmly gripped by the theory of evolution. It saddens me to see him like this, because he is one of the nicest people I know and he is so set on believing a lie.”
At just fourteen years old, Lauren finds herself on the front lines of the clash between the truth of creation and the lies of evolution.
I don’t know about you, but as a teenager I didn’t have to worry about whether my teacher was teaching plain truth or forcing a skewed ideology. I could simply attend class, learn the subject matter, and come home. I felt there was room for disagreement. Our students today deal with pressures unimaginable just 20 years ago!
Lauren and another Christian friend in her class are the only two students standing up for the truth of the Bible. They are the only two people willing to stare down evolutionist dogma.
Lauren’s letter shows just how well she understands the nature of evolutionist thinking. Did you notice how she described evolution’s influence on her teacher? He’s “firmly gripped” by it—he can’t get out! Perhaps he’s never even considered that there is a way out!
Another comment struck me in Lauren’s letter. She’s not angry with her teacher for teaching evolution. She doesn’t resent him or think badly of him. Instead, she says she’s saddened to see him “so set on believing a lie.” She responds to his wrongheaded thinking with compassion.
Letters like Lauren’s remind me that our efforts to point to the truth of creation ultimately come down to helping individual people. How can we help Lauren? How can we help her teacher?
Ultimately, our efforts are measured by how we equip believers to understand and articulate creation truth AND how we lovingly point non-believers toward creation truth.
CHALLENGING THE WORLD’S PATTERN
What will it take to reach someone steeped in years of evolutionist thinking to consider the truth of creation? How can we stop the de facto pattern of evolutionist belief being foisted upon unsuspecting students? Who will reach out to the scientists, teachers, and students who are taught to blindly follow evolution?
Creation Moments answers evolutionist lies with biblical truth. We believe the Bible says what it means and means what it says about God’s creation and sustenance of the world!
At the same time, we know that beliefs don’t exist in a vacuum—beliefs are only beliefs if someone believes them! In other words, we know that behind every belief is a person created in God’s image—a person who can be reached with God’s truth!
People sometimes ask me why I volunteer my time with Creation Moments. With a wonderful wife, six kids, a thriving business, and numerous church and civic responsibilities, why do I make Creation Moments a priority in my life?
The answer is simple: without God’s intervention in my life through the ministry of Creation Moments, I probably would have ended up like Lauren’s teacher—a boiled-in-the-wool evolutionist. And evolutionism is a dead-end belief system…
You see, in college I bought into the lies of evolution. In an environment hostile to faith and friendly to evolutionism, I was unable to reconcile my scientific beliefs with my Christian beliefs, and soon found my faith ebbing.
But by God’s grace, I learned the truth. I discovered that the best science available today supports the truth of creation—just as it is described in the Bible. I investigated the claims of evolution and found out just how shaky evolutionary belief really is, and how with some very reasonable assumptions the biblical model of creation is much more scientifically compelling. And I was welcomed into a thinking community of Christians who honor God AND practice great science.
God can reach the hardest hearts and open the most closed minds. God’s truth can touch the homeless person or the executive, the student or the teacher, the truck driver or the nurse. God reached me. God’s truth is unstoppable! Like the Bible says about a grain of wheat, a person has to die to himself and new life can really take hold.
RENEWING MINDS
I don’t know about you, but when I look around at our society, I sometimes wonder if it can get much worse. It seems there’s a major social ill for every letter of the alphabet: abortion-on-demand, binge drinking by teens, corporate scandals, “death with dignity” laws, evolutionist thought…
When the Apostle Paul wrote to the church at Rome, the Roman Christians were enduring a society every bit as depraved as ours. Sexual immorality was rampant (and encouraged), gladiatorial combat was the talk of the day, and, despite the high ideals of the Roman Empire, corruption ran deep.
Into this debauched, decadent society, Paul wrote to encourage these young Christians: “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will” (Romans 12:2).
Paul was saying, “I know that the world around you expects you to do things the way it does—to fit in. But there’s a higher call for you—a different way to live.” And then Paul goes on to tell us how to break away from worldly patterns: “be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” In other words, change the way you think!
Until minds are renewed, people won’t be able to escape the patterns of this world. They won’t be able to break away from the philosophies, beliefs and conjectures of a world distorted by sin.
Creation Moments exists to help people renew their minds—to change the way they think. Right perspective on creation leads to right perspective on Jesus Christ. Right perspective on Jesus Christ leads to right perspective on all of life!
Whether it’s equipping students with creation materials, encouraging parents and grandparents through Web resources, or broadcasting the truth of creation via radio to a worldwide audience of both believers and unbelievers, the mission of Creation Moments is to shine the light of God’s truth into the darkness of a world stuck in its own patterns.
FINDING TRUE REALITY
All of us at Creation Moments are continually humbled by God’s incredible blessings on this ministry. The platform He has given us to proclaim the truth of creation is remarkable—more than 1,200 radio outlets worldwide! Add to that our collection of creation materials—one of the largest in the world—plus our expanded website (www.creationmoments.com), which receives 7,000 visits each month, and you get a sense of how God has positioned this ministry to communicate biblical truth.
As of this writing it’s not yet official, but it appears we may have yet another significant opportunity to represent the truth of creation. Last month, a nationally broadcast reality television show contacted us, asking permission to use several “Creation Moments” programs on their show! (I’ll let you know more details in my next letter if they decide to use our broadcast.)
Whether “Creation Moments” appears on reality TV or not, our direction is clear: we will continue to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ and the truth of creation. We will continue to develop “Creation Moments” programs that engage listeners and underscore the compelling truth of God’s creative genius. And we will continue to do whatever we can to help people renew their minds and find the true reality of Jesus Christ.
