Little doubt exists over the fact that we live in a wonderful and complex universe. Plants, animals, humans, and even the vast array of planets in our enormous solar system, function together in a precise, regulated manner. How did this all come about? Obviously, this didn't just happen by chance but resulted from the oversight of a divine Creator. God fashioned everything we see, or cannot see, in our immense universe. Further, He created everything in a sensible sequence. Thus, each day of creation produced exactly what was needed for creative acts that would continue the following days. Creation's Sensible Sequence documents these well-planned creative acts as performed by our omnipotent God.

Bulldogs in the Light of Easter

Dear Creation Friend,

Have you ever been discouraged? Do you ever feel like you can’t hang on any longer?

I know each one of us has our war stories, because that’s what we are in—a war!  It’s a war with the world, the flesh, and the devil!

Christians are admonished to apply faith and determination in the face of all kinds of discouraging tactics of the devil. As creationists in a world dominated by the lie of evolution, we must proceed with the determination of a bulldog. The good news is that in spite of all the bluster and intimidation by those who want to deny God and His Word, determination to stand for the cause of right and truth pays off.

The Bible exhorts us to press ahead, holding on with determination. “Fight the good fight of faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you have been called” (1Tim. 6:12). The Lord provides for us as we obey in faith and perseverance, and never tests us beyond our capacity, but WE need to take hold and keep holding on.

Winston Churchill, “the British Bulldog,” whose determined leadership won the Battle of Britain, made this observation: “The nose of the bulldog is slanted backwards so it can continue to breathe without letting go.” As Christians we can rest assured that as we  exercise determination in obedience to the Lord, the Spirit of God will keep us alive and breathing!

A Dog-Eat-Dog World

There is an episode in Jack London’s classic novel White Fang that illustrates the bulldog’s ability. Part wolf, part dog, White Fang has become the reigning champion of the far North in the cruel sport of dog fighting.  Kept caged and full of hate, White Fang defeats all challengers, dog and wolf alike.

Then someone brings in a bulldog, a ragged veteran of dog fights. And this dog—though much slower and much less agile than White Fang—because of its sheer determination eventually wears White Fang down, managing to grab a hold on his chest just below the neck. White Fang has slashed the bulldog’s ears and cut the bulldog repeatedly. But the bulldog, with its low center of gravity and wide stance, keeps coming, finally getting the viselike grip around White Fang’s neck, breathing through its peculiar nose and holding tight as White Fang thrashes around.

The bulldog eventually has White Fang down on the ground, where the former champion struggles to breathe, on the brink of death. White Fang is saved only by a man who walks in at the last minute and buys him from his cruel owner.  The bulldog’s determined approach won the fight against a seemingly more capable foe.

Similarly, Winston Churchill’s single-minded determination led the British to victory against all odds in World War II. When the Nazi war machine appeared ready to overwhelm the unprepared and unequipped British, Churchill supplied the people with the vision and the determination which proved victorious in the Battle of Britain.

Churchill’s determination was exemplified in his famous statement, made with his usual  vigor: “We shall fight on the beaches! We shall fight on the landing yards! We shall fight in the fields, and in the streets! We shall fight in the hills! We shall never surrender!” Churchill was indeed a bulldog.

Determination exercised in faith and obedience, through love. That’s what is asked of us.

Our world views many things backwards. For example, we have a modern education system that seeks to promote self-esteem and pride, thinking that in order to be empowered we need to be “proud.” The secular educators reason that self-esteem (pride) helps us rise with determination above the disappointments of life, and leads to greater human achievement. This fallacy is the goal of secular humanism and is, in many ways, the philosophy of the modern state, undergirded by the theory of evolution.

Pride may give us a certain power, but it’s like the magic ring in Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Pride hooks us, enslaves us, and can eventually destroy us. Pride is our enemy, not our friend. As the Bible says, “There is a way which seems right to a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death” (Prov. 14:12).

Mankind is not rationally motivated to reject Christ. Who in their right mind would reject the testimony of corroborating witnesses of a spectacular miracle and a gracious gift with a wonderful benefit package (the gospel)? When you think about it, such a rejection is actually irrational. This is part of man’s condition of depravity. Mankind is motivated to be irrational in the rejection of truth and goodness because of rebellious pride.

Living in the Light of Easter

We are in fact blind and imprisoned because of  the rebellion and pride that is our nature. And it is a miraculous awakening when we break through to the truth of God in Christ!

In the imagery of a great hymn writer:

            Long my imprisoned spirit lay
Fast bound in sin and nature’s night.
Thine eye diffused a quick’ning ray
I woke the dungeon flamed with light.
My chains fell off my heart was free
I rose went forth and followed Thee.
Amazing love! How can it be,
That Thou my God shouldst die for me!
—Charles Wesley, “And Can It Be?”

The scriptures tell us that the way up is not grasping for all we can get through self-will and pumping up self-esteem. The scriptures tell us that the way up is first down; that humility leads to ultimate empowerment and that this is the true key to life.

In Phillipians 2 we are exhorted to “let this mind be in you” (have the attitude of Christ) who “did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself” and “humbled Himself by becoming obedient” to the point of a horrible death on a cross.

Earnestly following Jesus Christ requires sacrifice of some kind—time, effort, money. The scripture goes on to say that as a result of Christ’s “obedience to the point of death, even death on a cross” He has been highly exalted above every other name.

We should esteem ourselves only in so far as we belong to Christ, and so rejoice in the wonderful promise of the resurrection. As Easter approaches let us reflect on this wonderful truth!

Some of you may not have heard the news of the passing of Dr. Henry Morris, 87. Known as the father of the modern creation movement, Henry Morris was a brilliant man of science and scripture who authored some 75 books and founded the Institute for Creation Research, among many other accomplishments. I was able to attend his funeral service on behalf of Creation  Moments and was blessed by the remembrances and example of this great Christian man.

Dr. Morris had every reason to be proud and full of self-esteem, but he was noted over and over again for his humility. Some personal admonitions he pasted in the flyleaf of his Bible, along with the whole record of his life, have made it clear that here was a man determined to really take hold and hang on in obedience to God with a life consecrated to His service and calling.

Dr. Morris was a Christian hero, determined to search for and defend the scientific implications of a literal reading of the Bible and to expose the fallacies of evolution. Creation Moments is honored to have counted Dr. Morris as a friend and supporter for many years. Before the founding of ICR, Creation Moments (then known as the Bible-Science Association) provided a platform in the 1960s and early 1970s for Dr. Morris’s writing.

As Easter is upon us we can rejoice in the work of Jesus Christ on our behalf, and in the wonderful legacy of those before us who have tenaciously followed Christ in service and obedience. In the words of Charles Wesley—“Foll’wing our exalted head”.

On Easter Sunday, churches around the world will ring out with Wesley’s great Easter hymn “Christ the Lord is Risen Today.” And Christians everywhere will be thrilled as we sing:

Soar we now where Christ has led, Alleluia!
            Foll’wing our exalted head, Alleluia!
Made like Him, like Him we rise, Alleluia!
Ours the cross, the grave, the skies, Alleluia!

This past month Dick Rothermel wrote to us telling about his deep desire to inform his church through adult Bible classes about the creation truth of Genesis. Working with his pastor, Rothermel wants to compile creation resources with a vision to “make creation an unavoidable issue.” He asked for prayer for all the families of his church, “that their children may be defended from the promiscuous evil of evolutionism, that we all grow stronger in contending for the faith, and go forth with confidence in the truth of scripture.”

What a wonderful desire and vision for us all! Dick also disclosed a little about his own “awakening,” saying that he first heard Creation Moments in the 1980s. Based on the one program he heard, he wrote to us for information; since then, he has become well grounded in creation science and has taught it in Bible classes.

Won’t you help us to continue to be used by God to bring the light of day into a world “fast bound in sin and nature’s night?” The deception of evolutionism is a key deception of the devil in our time. It is imperative for the work of ministry that Christians address head-on the devil’s key fallacies in their time and culture.

Be inspired with the determination of a bulldog—to obey the Lord, to follow Him in self-sacrifice and obedience. You will be blessed as you do, finding yourself wrapped up in a special, jealous love which comes to those who are very near to His heart.

Please pray for us, and give sacrificially what you can.

Thank you for helping to see souls made free and alive in Christ. Only eternity will know the fullness of what you’ve done in this day.

Yours in Christ,

Mark Cadwallader
