Dear Friend of Creation,

Scratches on the skin, bacteria in the throat and sore, infected glands are everyday, ordinary occurrences that happen to us all. Their presence indicates the tremendous warfare continually taking place in our bodies on a bio-molecular level between bacterial, viral and toxic invaders … and the blood-borne armies of our immune system. If it were not for these defending immune-system “troops”, the invaders would kill us pretty quickly. 

As God’s revelational truth of the Bible puts it, “the life of the flesh is in the blood” (Lev. 17:11) – in a way much more profound than we might realize.

Life is contained within the circulatory and respiratory systems. Nearly every cell in the body is located next to a tiny blood vessel so that it can exchange food, hormones and essential oxygen with the blood. And at creation, God “breathed into [Adam’s] nostrils the breath of life” (Gen. 2:7). Sounds like Adam was “started up” with something like artificial respiration – with that “breath of life” carried to all parts of the body by the blood.

Until just a few centuries ago, medical science had a very confused understanding of the importance of the chemical processes of blood. For example, doctors believed that George Washington’s fever was caused by too much blood. On the evening of December 13, 1799, they prescribed bleeding several pints of blood from his body – and thus, the first president of the United States was bled to death!

Today we have an understanding of how one molecule of hemoglobin in the blood, with an iron atom at the center of each of four quadrants of its peculiar structure, is specifically shaped and constituted to “grab hold of” and transport up to eight atoms of oxygen to the far-flung cells of the body. It’s another wonderful display of the complex biological machinery all around us (and, in this case, within us).

We also know how the thing that keeps us alive against the ravages of toxins and infections is the blood’s immune system. Our amazing immune system includes: natural “killer cells”, which attack tumors and viruses; helper T-cells, which help organize the immune response; gamma interferon, a hormone which activates the immune system; antibodies like immunoglobin A; complement 3, which helps antibodies pierce infected or dysfunctional cells; and B-cells, which produce the antibodies.

The Nobel Prize in Medicine was given some years ago to honor the discovery of how the critical T-cells of the immune system learn to recognize and kill virus-infected cells. This led, among other things, to the development of drugs to prevent rejection of organ transplants.

Viruses are difficult for the immune system to contend with because they disguise themselves by hiding within the body’s own cells – a “uniform” which the immune system’s “soldiers” have learned to overlook. In this situation, the immune system must “train” and deploy the special B- and T-lymphocyte cells to recognize and neutralize the virus-infected cells!
  
I’m always impressed by the following paradox, which is quite instructive about the prejudice and bias of sinful mankind … and about the lengths to which man will go to distort the truth of God.

This month, for example, we are celebrating the technological achievement of man walking on the moon – the fortieth anniversary of Neil Armstrong’s historic steps on July 20, 1969. This was indeed a tremendous achievement of intelligent planning, design and execution. But when it comes to the much more intricate and sophisticated systems of life – such as the chemistry and mechanisms of the human body – we are supposed to believe that they are the products of chance and natural selection, not intelligence!

The amazing wonder of intelligent design in living things clearly points to the super-intelligent personality of our great Creator God. It really is quite illogical, indeed ludicrous, to believe otherwise – going against all our experience of cause and effect! You see, evolution has its own faith system of specialized but biased assumptions and terminology. This faith system minimizes God, getting Him completely out of the picture – something that the world, the flesh and the devil are, of course, quite happy to do.

The record shows that those most honest and lucid about it confess that evolution is indeed a matter of their will (faith) rather than the evidence. For example, Harvard professor emeritus of biology and Nobel Prize winner George Wald has confessed to Scientific American magazine, “I do not want to believe in God. Therefore I choose to believe in that which I know is scientifically impossible – spontaneous generation arising to evolution.”
